Dark Shadows fans, take note. The prime-time resurrection of the '60s daytime soap opera premiering Jan. 13 is "very much a modern update" and a lot sexier than it was before, according to costar Lysette Anthony.
"There's more deep breathing," she says. The British actress, who plays Angelique the witch on the new NBC series, adds that she's amazed "at the scope we've been allowed to explore. When I did stuff for American TV in England. we always had to do two versions" -- one tamer for U.S. consumption. She reports that most of the new Dark Shadows is "all suggestion -- but boy is it suggestive!" Anthony says her Angelique is "a sexually obsessed woman with a mania for demonology. She's always off somewhere casting terrible spells and wreaking havoc, pain and destruction." Angelique is the maid/confidante of Barnabas's fiancée, Josette. But, says Anthony, "Angelique and the vampire Barnabas are having an affair. She keeps trying to seduce Barnabas, who says, 'No, no, no... yes," then regrets it terribly later. When he finally rejects her, and she realizes there'll be no more midnight rendezvous, she curses him. It's a lot of fun." Sure sounds like it.
